Perkins Park in Latrobe is set to undergo major upgrades thanks to a large grant from the Liberal & Nationals Federal Government, Tasmanian Senators Richard Colbeck and Steve Martin announced on Sunday.
Liberal Senator for Tasmania Richard Colbeck said it is important community sport infrastructure keeps up with the needs of locals.
“Latrobe has seen growing grassroots sport participation, particularly from women and girls, and delivering a strong economy and Budget surplus has allowed us to back them to upgrade their Club facilities,” Senator Colbeck said.
Tasmanian Nationals Senator Martin said delivering funding for regional Tasmania was his most important focus.
“I recently brought Nationals Deputy Leader and Minister for Sport Bridget McKenzie to Latrobe to help convince her of the merit of Council’s funding application. A successful outcome followed,” Senator Martin said.
Latrobe Mayor Peter Freshney welcomed the funding boost.
“Latrobe Council has an ambitious plan to upgrade Perkins Park with the Community Sport Infrastructure Grant of $100,000 from Canberra expanding the project through the installation of additional lighting, the re-orientation of the concrete wicket, a new playing surface, replacement of existing training nets, new goal posts and barrier fencing to address risk issues,” Mayor Freshney said.
“This project is particularly important and will assist in meeting the needs of continued participation growth in both football and cricket of local girls and boys.”
